THE GREAT CANADIAN BIO-BLITZ, 2007

OTTAWA CELEBRATES AT MACOUN MARSH (May 26/27, 2007) We had an absolutely amazing weekend working with the Canadian Biodiversity Institute.  We involved the community in a very special species count at our marsh. This event honoured the United Nations Day for Biological Diversity (May 22, 2007).  David Coates, Environmental Affairs Officer for inland waters, represented the United Nations Secretariat on May 26.  This activity-filled weekend celebrated the Grand Opening of the Macoun Marsh Outdoor Classroom.

Welcome to the JVC - St. Laurent Academy Macoun Marsh Website

The Macoun Marsh is located on the grounds of Beechwood, soon to be Canada's National Cemetery in Ottawa, Ontario.  It is a small wetland filled with many different species of life; 1182 have been documented so far.

IN 2006 WE TRAVELED TO SWEDEN FOR THE VOLVO/ UN ENVIRONMENTAL COMPETITION- WE CAME IN NUMBER 2!  NOT BAD FOR A WORLD COMPETITION WITH 43 COUNTRIES AND ABOUT 300 PROJECTS!  IN 2007 WE TRAVELED TO COSTA RICA TO EXPLORE SOME TROPICAL ECOSYSTEMS.  THIS YEAR WE PRESENTED AT THE UNITED NATION'S TUNZA EVENT IN NORWAY.  IN 2008 WE WON FIRST PRIZE IN TOYOTA CANADA'S CHAMPIONS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

We have compiled 6 years of observations that include important climate records.

Macoun Marsh Project

The Macoun Marsh project aims to:

  • Research, enhance and protect the ecology found here.
  • Record the biodiversity through every season.
  • Record the warming effects of an ever changing climate.
  • To educate the community about the value of urban wetlands with news articles, presentations and a website.

Help us share our project with the world by purchasing a photo.  The first series of pictures are frogs, moths butterflies and birds from spring 07'.

Please check out Severn Susuki's video from Rio a few years back.  It certainly speaks to the aura of our project...

Small Summary

We have seen our project grow from a one class school project to a joint-school initiative with far reaching effects.  Our young people have been an active force from the beginning-  from the naming of the marsh, to the finalizing of the Enhancement Project.  A special thankyou to The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation for their support.
